Disclaimer: The following answers are based on MY OWN understanding and experience of the program admission. This page will be removed when the following information is no longer valid.

All information here was available to students who attended the McMaster PA Information Session that occurs around November. I encourage you to check the official admissions page or email the program office at paprogram@mcmaster.ca. There is also the McMaster PA Program Information Handout that highlights some important information.

1. What are the application requirements

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on the OMSAS scale
  • Completion of at least 2 years of university level undergraduate education
  • Completion of Supplementary Application
  • No required courses

2. How is GPA calculated?

  • STEP 1. Use the OMSAS scale for your university and convert each of your final marks into GPA
    • For UWaterloo students, a mark of 85 corresponds to a GPA of 3.9.
    • For McMaster students, a mark of “A” corresponds to a GPA of 3.9
  • STEP 2. Multiply the GPA for each course that you just converted by the course credit (eg. 0.5 credit, 0.25 credit)
    • For course XYZ, I achieved a mark of 85 (GPA of 3.9). The course is worth 0.5 credits.
      • GPA x Credits = 3.9 x 0.5 = 1.95
  • STEP 3. Final GPA = Sum of all of the values you calculated in Step 2 DIVIDED by the number of courses you calculated for
    • Say I am only calculating my GPA for one term where I took five 0.5 credit courses and one lab (0.25 credits).
      • Course A = 80% = 3.7 GPA x 0.5 credits = 1.85
      • Course B = 85% = 3.9 GPA x 0.5 credits = 1.95
      • Course C = 87% = 3.9 GPA x 0.5 credits = 1.95
      • Course D = 90% = 4.0 GPA x 0.5 credits = 2.00
      • Course E = 91 % = 4.0 GPA x 0.5 credits = 2.00
      • Lab F = 77% = 3.3 GPA x 0.25 credits = 0.825
    • SUM = 1.85 + 1.95 + 1.96 + 2.00 + 2.00 + 0.825 = 10.575
    • # of Credits Earned = 0.5(5) + 0.25(1) = 2.75
    • Final GPA = SUM/# credits earned = 10.575/2.75 = 3.85

3. What marks do admission take into account?

  • I am in my fourth year. Do you look at my best 2 years?
    • No. The program will take into account of ALL undergraduate courses you have taken up to the application deadline
      • Eg. Final marks from the term before Feb 1st (application deadline) are considered.
  • I am in the midst of completing my Masters, do you take that into account?
    • Only completed post-graduate work will be considered.

4. How is GPA and Supplementary application weighted for invitation for interview?

  • GPA is weighted a little bit more than the supplementary application

5. How many applications did you receive for the 2014-2015 cycle?

  • About 600 applications were received for 24 spots in the program

6. What was the incoming GPA average of last year’s class (Class of 2016)?

  • 3.72

7. When do we expect a reply?

  • Invitation for interview in late March
  • Interview in early May
  • Acceptance mailed out between mid May to early June.
